The Long Way Out

Familiarity turned hostile — the way back is never the way you remember it.

A lone hero descends into a self-contained dungeon to find four lost companions. No town, no shops, no gold — everything comes from the depths. Once the party is whole at the bottom, the only exit is back up through the same layout, now repopulated stronger. No bosses. The dread is rooms you already know turning hostile.

The Long Way Out — solo hero descending a dungeon to rescue four lost companions
Field-to-arena hybrid · Dungeon Master director

Descent

Gather the party

Solo hero → rescue vignettes per faction (Orc Warren, Skeleton Crypt, Werebeast Den, Dark Army on the end floor). Scout, Detect, Sense, and Force utility skills stack as members join — rescue order changes how legible the dungeon becomes.

Campfires are the only loadout swap, craft, and revival points. The Reunion Checkpoint at the bottom converts everything hoarded into what the party carries into the ascent.

Ascent

Same map, hostile again

Reverse traversal through familiar rooms now packed with buffed mobs, random affixes, and Elite spikes — never bosses. The Cursed Knight flees ahead, never fought, empowering what comes next.

4–5 hand-authored floors · 2-reagent crafting · downed/revival economy · mercy-biased Dungeon Master · Hardcore mode TBD in playtesting.
